What are the Benefits of an Urban Retirement?

Most surveys report that many people want to retire in a small town or rural location.  Yet an urban retirement has benefits, too. It is true that cities are usually more expensive than small towns, and cities sometimes have a higher crime rate than less populated areas, but they generally have a bounty of amenities - theater, museums, movies, shopping, sporting events, etc. - that smaller towns cannot match.  Health care facilities are often more sophisticated; dining options are usually more varied and transportation options are generally more in-depth than in small towns.  And residents usually come from a wide socioeconomic spectrum, creating an interesting tapestry of cultures and viewpoints.   So while small towns and rural spots have a lot to offer and always will, cities are worth a look at retirement time, too.
