Georgia Taxes

In Georgia, Social Security income is not taxed.  Additionally, up to $35,000 of retirement income is also tax exempt.  In 2012, taxes on retirement income will be eliminated entirely.  Until then, taxpayers that are 62 or better and permanently disabled are eligible for an adjustment. Residents 65 and better qualify for a $10,000 homestead exemption from school taxes when they earn less than $10,000 annually.  They also qualify for $4,000 exemption from state and county taxes.    People 62 or better whose income is less than $30,000 may qualify for an exemption from state and county property taxes equal to the amount by which the assessed value of the homestead exceeds the assessed value for the preceding tax year.  Regular income is taxed between 1% and 6%.
