What are Retirement
Communities?
Retirement communities come in all shapes and
sizes. They can be for all ages (and marketed that way),
just for people age 55+ (although 20% of residents can usually be
younger), just for people age 62+ or for all ages but marketed to the
55+ demographic. Some are master-planned, laid out with amenities
from the very get-go, while others develop over time into a place that
attracts a more mature set. They can be apartments, condos,
co-ops, manufactured homes, RV communities and places where real estate
is for sale or for sale and for lease, either by the community itself
(some have actual rental programs) or by individual owners.
Amenities may be as simple as one small clubhouse or as lavish as a
marina, several golf courses and an extensive menu of activities, often
led by an activities director. Most allow small
pets. HOA fees vary, but often older communities have higher
fees.
