Live Oak, located in southeast Shreveport, Louisiana, which is in the northwest portion of the state, is a religious-based, multi-faith continuing care retirement community (CCRC) that serves people with many different backgrounds.  This facility leases apartments to seniors who are able to live independently and offers private and semi-private rooms to seniors who need assisted living and/or nursing care.  It was the first CCRC in the state of Louisiana and opened in 1982.  The minimum age for acceptance to Live Oaks is 62 years.

Those interested in the independent living apartments will need a pre-admission screening from their private doctor.  This doctor's okay must accompany the application and $25 nonrefundable application fee.    Studio apartments, one bedroom apartments and two-bedroom apartments are available for lease.   Studio prices start at $985 per month for one person ($1,235 for two people) and  top out at $1680 per month for a two a bedroom apartment for one person ($1,935 for two people).   These monthly rents include a daily noon meal, housekeeping services, two free transports to local doctors, 24 hour security, utilities (except phone and electricity), a 24 hour emergency call system and more.  Extra meals range from $135 to $275 per month.  There is no entry fee.

Residents are also able to partake in community services that include check-cashing, scheduled group transportation to grocery stores, cultural events and restaurants and newcomer parties, and they may receive personal assistance, if needed, with paying bills, opening mail, etc.   Live Oak also has a number of activities and events, as well as overnight trips, each month to enhance the cohesiveness of the community.  The on-site health and wellness program provides free hearing screenings, first aid as needed, flu vaccinations and exercise classes.  Call 318-797-1900 for more information.

For those seniors who are unable to live on their own, Live Oak offers 130 private and semi-private rooms (307 square feet to 380 square feet) in the Winona Brown Ward Health Center, a long-term care facility under the supervision of a licensed nursing facility administrator, a medical director and professional nurses.  Fees range from $3,165 per month for a smaller semi-private room to $3,825 per month for a larger private room and include 24-hour nursing services, three meals a day, scheduled activities and housekeeping services.  Doctors fees and medications are not included in this price.  Live Oak also offers counseling services and nutrition services to its residents.   There is no entry fee, just a $35 application fee.

This community is situated on pretty grounds with ponds and live oaks and is about to expand by partnering with the non-profit Willis-Knighton Health System.  In the works is a nearly 300-acre retirement community that will offer single family, patio homes in addition to more in-depth health care options for seniors who currently live at Live Oak and for those who will be moving here in the future.

With its emphasis on the Christian faith and spirituality, Live Oak offers a number of religious activities each month, including a Bible study, lectures from area clergy, prayer groups, and has an on-site chaplain.  Some Jewish holidays are also celebrated.

Shreveport (population 200,000) is essentially hot and humid.  January's high temperature averages 56°, and the average high temperature in July is 93°.   Winter temperatures rarely drop below 30°.   The area receives 3 to 5 inches of rain per month, and the skies are cloudy or partly cloudy roughly 70% of the time.   Seniors should be aware that the area is prone to hurricanes and was in the path of Hurricane Rita recently.
