This non-profit continuing care retirement community was founded in 1884 as a home for retired "gentlewomen."   Today, it has a lush, new 39-acre campus in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts, attracts men and women and offers independent living, assisted living and assisted living at home.

Glenmeadow has113 attractive independent living apartments with 14 floor plans, and they come with 1 bedroom, 2 bedrooms or 2 bedrooms with a den.  All units include a fully-equipped kitchen, full-size washer and dryer, wall-to-wall carpeting, walk-in closets, thermal-pane windows, air-conditioning and more.

As part of their contractual agreement, independent living residents receive inclusive pricing; this covers move-in assistance, all utilities (except phone), scheduled transportation, a flexible dining plan, housekeeping services, independent thermostat, cable-TV, take-out services and  handyman services.

In addition, snow removal, trash removal, wellness programs, 24 hour emergency services, 24 hour security, banking services, internet access (in the library) and computer training are provided.  A nurse is on duty 24 hours a day.   More services, including a manicurist, meal delivery and catered parties, are available for additional fees.  Call 800-633-6313 for information.

Two types of entrance fees are available for those interested in independent living at Glenmeadow.  One is the 90% refundable fee plan, which means that the amount you pay is reduced by one percent for each month for the first ten months of residency.   If you leave Glenmeadow, transfer to Assisted Living or pass away after the first ten months of residency, you (or your estate) will receive 90% of your entrance fee back.  If you leave during the first ten months, you will receive an amount equal to the total paid, less one percent for each month of occupancy.   The entrance fee under this plan ranges from $149,200 - $417,100.  The idea is that selling one's current home will pay the entrance fee.

The second option is the declining refund plan.  Under this arrangement, the amount you pay is reduced by one percent each month of residency for 100 months.   For example, if you transfer to assisted living after 45 months of residency, you will receive 55% of the entrance fee back.  If you pass away after 100 months of residency or more, there will be no refund to your estate.  The declining refund entrance fees range from $116,900 - $326,900.

In addition to the entrance fee, there is a monthly service fee, which is between $1,494 - $3,121.  If a second person lives in the same unit, the second person monthly fee is $550.

The assisted living wing (Chestnut Knoll Assisted Living Wing) of Glenmeadow is for those who need help with ADLs (activities of daily living), including bathing, eating, dressing, etc., and a personalized plan is developed for each resident.  This covers the meal program, medication management, licensed nursing coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, up to one hour per day of personal assistance, weekly housekeeping and personal laundry service, yearly heavy cleaning, apartment and common areas maintenance, cable television, scheduled transportation, 24-hour security, all utilities, and a full schedule of recreational and social activities.  There is no entrance fee, just a monthly fee that ranges from $4,471 - $5,445 per month; if a second person lives in the unit, the additional fee is $1,430 per month.  Long-term care insurance will usually cover these costs.

For those who want to stay in independent living but who would like extra help in their own home, Glenmeadow offers assisted living at home, in which caregivers provide companionship, homemaking, and personal care services, including feeding, bathing, dressing, meal preparation, errand running, light housekeeping, plant care, appointment setting and more.   Fees are $19 per hour and there is a two hour minimum.

Glenmeadow offers quite a few amenities, including a great hall for movies and lectures, an arts studio, a billiards room, a library, a woodshop, an indoor pool with skylights, a bank and concierge, gardening areas, a gym, 2 dining rooms and a cafe.   It is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities-Continuing Care Accreditation Commission, an independent third-party that performs an on-site quality review.   Glenmeadow is one of five CCRCs in Massachusetts to receive this accreditation and only one of 340 across the U.S.
