Nestled just south of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountains is the Highlands of  Golden Oaks Village, a new active adult community for those 55 and above.  Roughly two hours west of New York City, residents here enjoy the tranquility and natural beauty of this recreational region while also being able to easily partake a day or two in an exciting, vibrant city.   The Poconos have a population of nearly 300,000, but this is still a rural area, offering a peaceful place for retirement.

Homes in Golden Oaks Village are single-family dwellings and town homes with prices ranging from $195,000 to the mid-$300,000s.  These are stick-built (site-built), custom homes with one to three bedrooms, two to three baths, one or two stories, garages and sun decks.  Currently, the smallest town home has 1,000 square feet and the largest has 1,475 square feet;  the smallest free standing home has 1,300 square feet and the largest has 2,020 square feet.  More homes are coming.   Twelve models with 120 floor plans are available from which to choose.  HOA dues are $160 per month and cover lawn care, trash pick-up, snow plowing, maintenance of common areas and clubhouse amenities. Call 1-800-826-2065 for more information.

The clubhouse will offer plenty of activities and facilities to keep Village Oak residents busy and involved. A golf course, a swimming pool, a library, meeting rooms, arts and crafts rooms, a fitness and exercise center and a computer lab are all planned, as are walking and biking paths, shuffleboard, a tavern and grill and tennis courts.  Village Oak is surrounded by more than 5,700 acres of undeveloped State Game Lands, providing endless opportunities for hiking, downhill and cross country skiing, horseback riding and fishing.

White Haven, the borough in which Village Oak is located, has a population of about 1,200 people.  Several hospitals are within fifteen miles.  Museums, symphonies, theater, shopping and sporting events venues are within two to three areas.

The elevation is 1,221 feet, and summer temperatures reach into the 70s and 80s.  Winters see temperatures in the teens, 20s and 30s.  Precipitation averages three to four inches per month, some of which can be significant snowfall from November through March.   The sun shines 40% to 50% of the time.
