Pretty St. George, a town situated in
the very southwestern corner of Utah, is a favorite
spot for retirement, and SunRiver, a master-planned,
gated, 55+ development on the outskirts of town, was
built to accommodate the area's growing retiree
population. This energetic community was
established in 1998 and has 600+ single family homes
that, with tan sandstone exteriors and red tile
roofs, resemble Spanish Colonial villas. It is
a well designed place, neat and tidy under a blue
desert sky.

Potential residents find a good selection of homes with
prices starting in the mid- to high $100,000s.
Although the community is 10 years old, buyers can still
view fifteen model homes and choose the features they
desire. There are also resale homes and luxurious
designer homes available. Prices for these tend to be
higher, reaching into the $800,000s, although many homes are
in the $200,000 to $300,000 range. Sizes for less
expensive residences range from around 1,000 sq. ft. (two
bedrooms and two baths) while the more expensive dwellings
have 3,200+ sq. ft., three bedrooms and three baths.
All homes have attached garages, and the landscaping is
primarily xeriscape (drought resistant plants). Visit
www.sunriver.com for more information.

The heart of SunRiver is its 6,700 yard, 18 hole,
SunRiver St. George Golf Course, a meandering course
designed for all skill levels, and considering that St.
George's average January high is in the mid-50s, one that
can be played nearly year-round. To drive home
the point that this is a golf friendly community, golf carts
can be driven practically anywhere on the grounds, and most
of the amenities have golf cart parking areas. Some of
the homes are even built with a golf cart garage.
In addition to golf, residents enjoy a
29,000 sq. ft. community center that offers tennis,
two swimming pools, numerous game rooms and a wide
variety of clubs and activities. This center
is a great spot for meeting friends and is the
socializing center of SunRiver. The NewLife
Fitness Center has state of the art exercise
equipment, and for those that need some help staying
on a fitness regimen, the NewLife Fitness Program
provides residents with a personalized fitness
routine and personal trainer. No more excuses
for not getting in shape! In fact, many
residents participate in the annual World Senior
Games held in St. George each October.
SunRiver also presents the Institute for Continued
Learning (ICL) in conjunction with Dixie State
College. For about $40 a year, retirees can attend an
array of classes and participate in all sorts of activities
from hiking trips to museum tours. Nearby Zion
Canyon Field Institute in Zion National Park also offers
classes, as does the St. George Senior Center.
St. George (population 72,000), etched into dramatic red
rock cliffs, is in a pretty setting with a dry, sunny
climate. The city is within close driving distance of
eight state and national parks, including the north rim of
the Grand Canyon, and itself has an elaborate network of
hiking and bicycling trails, three reservoirs and numerous
parks. For anyone seeking an active, year-round
outdoor lifestyle, St. George is the place to be.
