In a Mellow Coastal Town, Gated Surfside Beach Club Has Single Story, Single Family Homes and is Popular with Baby Boomers

Surfside Beach, a casual seaside town along South Carolina's Grand Strand, has two miles of beautiful beach and is a popular vacation destination. It is also the site of Surfside Beach Club, a gated all ages community with nearly 500 single family homes. Although it is open to people of all ages, many residents are in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.

Construction of Surfside Beach Club began in 2004 and ended in 2016. The development is well groomed with lush green spaces, tall deciduous trees, short palm trees, colorful vegetation and pretty ponds. Nearly half of the residences back to water, and almost all of the homes are single story, a fact that older bodies appreciate. Each of the five neighborhoods (Lake Forest, Chalet, Landings, Coral Springs and Clearwater Lakes) has sidewalks, quiet lanes and its own character. Living spaces range from about 1,400 square feet to 2,700 square feet. Tall ceilings and open floor plans are standard.

The smallest homes are in the Chalet and Landing neighborhoods. The Chalet residences have Craftsman architecture with a low-slung, gabled roof, tapered support columns and a front porch. The Landing homes are made from brick and have a pitched roof, tall crescent windows and a recessed entryway.

The other neighborhoods have larger properties on larger lots. Lake Forest homes have Mediterranean architecture, while homes in Clearwater and Coral Springs are made from brick. All residences have an attached, two car garage.

Prices begin in the mid-$500,000s. The HOA fee is $100 per month. Please verify this price with a Realtor as it is bound to change.

Residents enjoy a full social calendar. Holiday parties, pool parties, evening movies, dances, game nights and potlucks are all well attended. The clubhouse is where most events occur. Attractive with dormer windows and white columns, it has dark, polished hardwood floors, a fitness center, a catering kitchen and more. Outside, a swimming pool, a spa and a gazebo await.

Huntington Beach State Park is within easy reach, and Myrtle Beach is less than 15 minutes away. Golf clubs in the area include Deer Track and Indian Wells.

Surfside Beach does not have a hospital, but Waccamaw Community Hospital is just six miles away in Murrells Inlet and is accredited.

Summer temperatures are in the 80s and 90s, and winter temperatures are in the 30s, 40s and 50s. On average, the area receives 54 inches of rain per year.

South Carolina:

Francisco de Gordillo explored the present-day South Carolina coast during 1521 but was unable to establish a town. The French also failed to colonize in 1562. The English settled here in 1670, but they moved on to Charleston when the conditions worsened. The two Carolinas split officially in 1729. The state was the first to leave the Union during the Civil War.

South Carolina was once primarily agricultural and still grows peanuts, watermelons, peaches and tobacco. Today, though, it is mostly known for its textile mills. Wood products, asbestos, steel, pulp and chemicals are particularly important. A commercial tea plantation, and the only one in America, lies on an island 20 miles South of Charleston.

Top attractions include Fort Sumter, which is a national monument, the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, the Cypress Gardens (located in Charleston), Hilton Head resorts, the Cowpens National Battlefield, the Botanical Gardens and the Riverbanks Zoo.

Recreation in a 55+ Development

Recreation amenities are one of the primary reasons that people choose to live in a 55+ development (and in some gated all ages communities). As baby boomers retire, more and more 55+ communities are popping up, and they are bringing a new level of activities and amenities not seen in older developments. The more expensive a community, often the more elaborate the recreation amenities, which these days can include a private lake with a marina and boat slips, an equestrian center, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a state of the art fitness center with training coaches, tennis courts, several 18-holf golf courses and putting greens, not to mention dozens of recreation clubs and planned trips. Throw in a lifestyle director (because some people cannot direct their own lifestyle) and the package is complete. Even less expensive communities often have a 9-hole golf course, a swimming pool, tennis courts and lots of clubs. This is not your father's retirement anymore.
